About The Bookshop
The Bookshop was set up as a new business on 1st September 2010 by Annabel (usually known as 'Annie') Walter, a long term resident of Alderney whose family has been associated with the island since the 1950s. Annie and her husband Peter live at Picaterre Farm on the island and keep hens, geese, sheep and a large vegetable garden.
Annie is a solicitor by profession having practised in England for many years before returning to Alderney in 2003 and she took the opportunity to open The Bookshop shortly after the previous bookshop closed in late 2009.
The main aim behind The Bookshop is to provide a friendly, efficient and interesting shop in which residents and visitors to Alderney can browse at leisure and purchase books and related goods. ‘The Bookshop is a member of the Hive initiative www.hive.co.uk launched in September 2011 for the promotion of independent bookshops. This is an exciting new development in the sale of books online at competitive prices – the purchaser logs on to the Hive website, chooses from the vast range of books and DVDs available at very competitive prices, pays online and nominates The Bookshop as the chosen collection point for the goods which are available to be collected within 2/3 days. More information about the Hive initiative is available from Annie at The Bookshop.
The Bookshop has also been featured in a national publication The Independent Bookshop Directory published by The Guardian as part of its book season in October 2011 and Annie has participated in two programmes on Radio Guernsey during 2011.
The Bookshop provides
The range of books available includes thrillers, biographies, classics, general fiction, history, military history and reference works with sections on cookery, gardening, sport, well-being, hobbies, travel and humour. Many recent publications of interest in all categories are always available with special offers on price where available. We cannot compete with the major online book suppliers on price regarding recent best sellers and the like but do find that prices are comparable for other books.
We have a great selection of books for children and young people with lots of special offers! Come and talk to Annie about your favourite books!
In addition, for a reasonable ‘finder’s fee’ Annie is happy to help customers to trace and purchase out- of- print or unusual books.’
New stock arrives regularly and orders for books not in stock are dealt with promptly by online ordering to suppliers.
